Since Joe was asking for some info on the 9-3 drill (hang in there Joe, we're publishing things as fast as we can), here's Dennis (new student, today was the first lesson). He is working on what he felt was an RST swing. Observe



His setup on the left was not good. His hands were well behind the ball and his spine was learning toward the target which will setup a lot of bad things as you shall see.



Now is where doing Move 1 correctly and being setup correctly gets the job done. This is the look of a near perfect takeaway from a very high handicapper in all of about 15 minutes of work.



Steep backswing, right hip bumping out, all baaaaaad.



He's not hitting a ball on the right, just working on pulling with his left oblique. He's more off his right side and his hands are leading the clubhead.


Hips facing the target on the right, hands in front of the chest, maintaining spine angle, head swivels, body through the shot, club fully released.

Here is a final shot of his "old" top of the swing position he started with on the left and where he was at the end of the lesson. Dennis' homework is doing the 9-3 drill for the next week, and more importantly do it at home in front of a mirror without a club.

Sure looks like this 'near perfect' takeaway includes a bent right elbow, doesn't it??!!

Hence "near-perfect" instead of "perfect", I imagine.

Some bend in the right arm at this point is fine, it typically happens much earlier and much more severe for most golfers.

Hey Chuck- 
 
I notice that his hips have not rotated at all in the backswing.  When I do the 9-3 drill or half swings, by moving my right shoulder back, my hips naturally rotate a little.  Is this ok?  Trying to do this in the mirror, I just can't seem to not move the hips a little.
 
Also, when I do the 9-3 drill, my 7 iron goes about 140-150, is that good?

his hips are purposely still square this point. 140-150 is excellent!

So it's ok to have the hips ok a little?  When I move to the full swing, I have a tendency to block my shots to the right with a slight fade. 
 
Do you have a general idea of why that may be?  I am trying to keep my head back, so maybe i am not fulling transferring to the left and rotating all the way through.  I do love the feeling of the 9-3 drill and it is slowly coming along on the full swings.
