I need your help !

Was just practising short pitch shots with an emphasis on playing the ball back in my stance to ensure I hit down on the ball and to get a consistent, clean strike . Initially I found the swing was actually bottoming out further back (actually where the ball physically was) and contact was inconsistent

Then realised if I physically looked at the front edge of the ball, contact improved. Then if I look at an 'imaginary' ball in the normal stance position contact seems to improve again.

Now while thats good I'm concerned about not looking at the ball ! I checked this on video but nothing obvious. I can only assume that when playing the ball further back I am subconciously trying to compensate somehow

Any thoughts ?
