So it wasn't the hat after all....
Good explanation. Coupling this with the hip spinners video will make this much easier to accomplish.

I may go for it or I may not. It all depends on what I elect to do on my backswing.

Would working on the "INCREASE YOUR LAG DRILL" in phase 5 of RS1 give me similar results? Looks like a lot of good info. using the impact bag. Edited by renoaz - 15 October 2010 at 12:12am |

Chuck,
Is the only real difference as the clubs get longer possibly pre-setting a little more spine tilt (e.g., "Bomb your Driver"), and then still feeling like your shoulders stay "level" to that pre-set position?? Aside from that, we're still "pulling our right arm down" even with drivers and fairway woods?
In other words, we should still never feel like we "swing up" with the Driver, even when we are trying to hit it on the upswing?

CQ,
How does the left oblique pulling motion fit into the sequencing of the transition and downswing? Not much has been commented on this specifically during the downswing videos. Is the left oblique an active motion or passive result of the arms coming down properly into impact ? Does the left oblique pulling promote hip spinning?

I was just doing this drill in my basement tonight and I noticed that I felt a lot of strain on my right wrist trying to keep that lag position where the club is parallel with only using my right arm. Is this something that takes time to build up the strength if you were a person who never really kept this lag in the swing? I broke that wrist when I was younger and it has always been considerably weak and I have compensated over the years in sports that I play. I checked to make sure I had my wrists cocked instead of hinged too. Just curious if this is sort of normal.

Regarding the left oblique....I feel this is an active movement for me. This is key for me to squaring to the ball (without any manipulation) while try to keep the feeling of the shoulders closed. My issues before (as a lot of people, I am sure) was instead of pulling the left oblique, i was rotating the hips and ripping the shoulders open. So from the top of the swing, I try to visualize my shoulders being concrete blocks (staying in the box) and from my hips down to my feet are very passive almost jelly like once I set on my left glute.

I just started working on the drill...
When moving to using two hands, should I feel that I'm "pressing down" with the base of my left hand as I approach the horizontal club position just prior to release? |

Chuck,
Can you touch on the right elbow flexion relative to this drill? Is it a gradual straightening of the flexion? Also can you note any relationships or similarities between the throw the ball drill and lag drill? Also you mention that the centripetal force that causes the lag to be lost is primarily caused by an overactive left side. Why do so many instructors believe that this fault is associated to an overactive right side action? Can you elaborate? Thanks Paul Edited by pauledel - 15 October 2010 at 5:24pm |

this post is my problem on the downswing big time
my weight also goes towards my toes and not hard enough towards my left heel. And then a terrible spin out of my hips to square up the club. The takeaways seem to be to keep your shoulders feeling closed, a weight shift instead of a turn until very late, and the core doing the work more than your hips to square the club. A lot to coordinate!
