Hey Everyone,
I finally got off my lazy butt and started practicing what we preach here. The past 2 weeks I have spent 15-30 minutes per day doing repetitions (usually around 120) in an effort to improve my backswing. (I spent most of last year working on my takeaway and got it in reasonably good shape.) Below are comparison pics, with the one on the left from last year, and the one on the right earlier today. The main things I was working on were the following: shoulder elevation, keeping my head from swaying off the ball (causing too much axis tilt), staying in the box, and keeping my right elbow close to my body. While nothing is perfect, I am pretty happy at my progress on all accounts. However, I noticed an obvious problem and decided to take advantage of one of the benefits of my position: getting advice from Chuck whenever I see him. I showed these pics to him, and he also quickly noticed the same issue and pointed out a couple of other things as well. Any guesses on what Chuck helped me with? ![]() |

I can't really tell....i think your earlier today position looks really good!!! :) Just wondering, is this a "pose to the top" swing or a full swing? [my problem is I can't get my swing to look like that in my real full swing.... I can only do that in my pose swing.] I have a feeling I am working on the same things as you....so I am looking forward to finding out!
Ok, if i were to take a guess at it...you are a little but above the shoulder plane? < id="gwProxy" ="">< ="jsCall;" id="jsProxy" =""> |

a tad laid off but that swing will def look a lot different when that stupid little white ball is in the way! ive noticed the same thing as jenni has with the "pose" swing and the "real" swing. looks great when practicing in front on a mirror but then when really hitting a shot it looks much different.

Very 2 planish. No question any more that the philosophy has truely changed from a bent over body with the arms rotating together on the shoulder plane. This is truely a less bent over body rotating horizontal with a vertical swing of the arms.

Which is exactly part of what I had him correct! His posture was too upright, too far back on his heels and his shoulder plane too flat, creating the need for him to overuse his arms and get into this excessively high hand position.

To me, left shoulder disconnection in both, which has allowed the left arm to go across the body too much and not enough in front of the body. This seems to cause an overswing of the arms too.
Maybe it is caused by a left shoulder push?

What Chuck pointed out a couple of posts ago regarding the shoulder plane was the part I hadn't yet put my finger on but became clear when he showed me a video of Tiger. (I think O'Hair exemplifies this also.) Chuck mentioned that my weight is too far back--in the heels instead of ankles--and fixing this should help.
The first thing I noticed is what Matt and t_mac have hit on -- the left arm seems to be causing me to be too laid-off. However, I'm pretty sure I'm not pushing with the left arm too much anymore. I think that would make it difficult to keep my elbow and upper right arm as close to my side as it is here. But I'm pretty sure it is over-active in another sense -- too much rotation. Chuck told me to monitor both the left arm and the right hand as I take it to the top to see which is most responsible for the issue but mentioned it is typically the left. Regarding whether I just got in a fixed position -- no, I went full speed and simulated the start of the downswing as well to make it as real as possible despite not hitting a ball. I'm confident these changes are becoming more automatic but certainly agree the real test will be my next range session. Of course, I'm in no rush since I've still got a lot of mirror work left to do! One more thing...I'm not sure what other people's experience with doing the reps has been, but after I made it through the first couple of days where everything felt uncomfortable and it really felt like work, I have absolutely enjoyed the hell out of it. Most days I have to force myself to stop and get back to everything else I have going on in my life. I'm definitely glad I finally started this regimen...

Not that it really matters, and not to bust anyones bubble but with all those things not being done corectly; the pic from last year looks better than after all those reps.

To the untrained eye I guess. His right elbow is much more in front of his body in the pic on the right, which is huge, and has elevated more for more leverage. These are very tough changes for many to make. He's also got more spine tilt on the right, although not enough. If you fix that and the rotation of his right arm, he will look very good at the top.
