Chuck -
Any advice on Strategy or Mental Approach when playing in qualifiers? Qualifiers always seem a bit strange because they are not the actual event & you don't have to play your best to make the number, but then again you can't relax too much & play loose. What is a good mindset in your opinion?

I believe that you should always play the same, every shot, every round, however, I can tell you that I tend to play more conservative in qualifiers which can work for you or against you. In 2006 qualifying for the Utah Open I hit 2 irons off every tee, never hit a driver and shot 2 under to make it in on the number. That was dictated by the course (OB and water on every hole) and by the the fact that I new the qualifying number in the past has been 75. Knowing if I just bunted it around I could shoot 75, coming into 18 I thought I was fine. So, on the par 5 18th I hit 2 iron again while everyone else hit driver 20-30 yards past me. I laid up and then hit my approach over the green (island green, landed on the walkway to the green). With my ball laying on a pile of rocks on the walkway and hitting to a green sloping away from me, I asked one of the officials what he thought the number was. He said 1 under. I nearly had a heart attack. I hit an unreal shot off the path and made a 20 footer to save par and waited for 2 hrs to find out I made it on the number. Had I not thought of it as a qualifier, I would have played more aggressive, but I also may have missed more shots - who knows. Long story short, you have to figure out your game at the time and what will work best for you.
